“It’s quite clear that we’ve lost the battle over hearts and minds for compliance with copyright law, and a law is only good as the society that’s prepared to accept it.”

“We may now need to accept that times have changed, that society now places a different value on what it is that we all do,” Barnett continued, suggesting that allowing people to share digital copies of content “within a certain threshold” would be “acceptable collateral damage for the wider health of the online media industry”.

“The explosion of rich media content such as Internet video is creating massive congestion issues in mobile networks,” said Kevin Oye, vice president of systems and technology at Sycamore, in a statement. “This trend will only accelerate as end-user devices become increasingly more powerful and more and more subscribers consume new bandwidth-intensive applications

Dutch newspaper The Telegraph has posted an article on how Dutch hotels are being plagued by ‘misbehaving’ Polish guests.
They tend to use their internet connections to visit dodgy sites and download lots of adult entertainment which is contaminated with malware.

As a result all hotel guests are suffering because the heavy traffic is clogging the local network. Secondly the Dutch internet providers have chosen to disconnect these internet users. As they do not use proper virus scanners, lots of malware is also leaving their PC’s via their e-mail applications.

Some hotels have created walled gardens and others use technology to detect malware on the network regardless whether or not the user has installed a virus scanner.

Oppressive regimes and even democratic governments restrict Internet access. Existing anti-censorship systems often require users to connect through proxies, but these systems are relatively easy for a censor to discover and block. This project offers a possible next step in the censorship arms race: rather than relying on a single system or set of proxies to circumvent censorship firewalls, we explore whether the vast deployment of sites that host user-generated content can breach these firewalls. We have developed Collage, which allows users to exchange messages through hidden channels in sites that host user-generated content
