A maturing of ISP services is needed and much more than one with a higher set of numbers attached to meaningless marketing metrics. Broadband needs to be become more dependable with service level agreements (SLAs) placed on even consumer services. Why should consumers, who pay money, not be guaranteed service? After all, when you buy something at the shop you don’t expect to hear that it might not work all the time, so why should this be the case with the provision of consumer broadband services?

ISPs for too long have managed to fleece consumers due to their ignorance. However it seems that as consumers start to realise that there is more to broadband than bandwidth, the ISPs will have to deliver much more than fancy ad campaigns.
While intuition says that competition should lead to better services, consumers are the ones that must drive ISPs towards providing truly useful broadband that has the ability to do so much more than just download small amounts of data very quickly.

I had never been called a Communist until I testified at a hearing on Capitol Hill.
The hearing in late June was on “China’s Information Control Practices and its implications for the U.S.” U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commissioner Carolyn Bartholomew was introducing me as an expert on China’s leading search engine company, Baidu.com, and the Internet. What she meant to say was that I am a “columnist” for Forbes–a slip of tongue she immediately corrected.

Online porn, the gray line which turns black.  There are approximately 370 million porn sites, approximately $3,000 is spent on internet porn each second, “sex” is the top search word worldwide (25% of searches).

Cable and Pay Per View porn is valued at $2.5 billion, the Internet at $2.5 billion, and child pornography at $3 billion yearly.

Approximately 100 thousand websites offer illegal child pornography, sexual solicitations in chat rooms to youth are at 89%.

The online porn problem permeates our culture from young to old, and priest to con.  Primarily a male agenda/problem, women also frequent porn sites, though at a lesser number.  As expected, one of the largest users of porn sites are older male teens.  And sometimes, your kid is online with these people, unknowingly.  Perhaps, he even gives out his phone number. (I know kids who have foolishly posted their addresses and phone numbers online.)

This is a call for the eradication of online porn, beginning in the home.  The governments around the world will only do so much.  Pornography is a multimillion dollar industry.  Money talks, eyes are blinded, heads are turned.

Online child pornography/child sexual exploitation investigations, which are worked under the FBI’s Innocent Images National Initiative, accounted for 39 percent of all investigations worked under the FBI’s Cyber Division in fiscal year 2007.

Last weekend’s arrest of former Williamstown headmaster David Harris on charges of possession of child pornography sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many with questions of how a respected individual could have allegedly taken part in such a heinous crime.

“The child pornography cases we investigate don’t involve 18-, 19- or 20-year-olds pretending to be younger,” (…). “Typically the cases involve images or movies of children who are very young — 2, 3 or 4 — being violently raped.”

“People have to understand that it’s not just websites, it’s more peer-to-peer file sharing networks, news-share groups, blogs and bulletin boards,” Kerle said. ”The Internet and its applications are neutrally designed, without good or bad intentions,” he said. “A photo site can be designed for families to easily share pictures across the country. This technology gets co-opted by child pornographers.”

He said things are complicated even more by every advance in technology.

“Digital cameras really eliminated the need to have film developed,” he said. “Social networking sites allow for private groups and there are websites where like-minded people exchange porn with live cameras — one person does the abusing and the rest of the participants watch.” But the fight against child pornography has made strides in recent years, with the forming of state task forces and help from companies within the computer and Internet industries.

“We work very closely with the ICAC and investigate every tip,” Shehan said. “The average citizen should have zero tolerance for this crime. In addition to reporting to us, they can make reports to Internet Service Providers, which are federally mandated to make reports to us.”

Since the inception of its Cyber Tipline (www.cybertipline.com) in 1998, the National Center has received 923,000 tips — all of which have been investigated. Analysts have viewed 36 million images of child pornography, identifying about 3,000 children since 2002.

Richard Buis (…) was a vice president at Lethbridge College. Police allege that between 2008-2010 the accused downloaded and accessed video files via the Internet of preteen children engaged in sexual acts and that he made those files available to others.
According to information in the search warrant application, members of the college’s IT Services department had orders from Buis not to access any of his computers unless he was present. IT personnel considered his direction odd because no one else on staff, including the college president, imposed such restrictions. They didn’t question it, however, because of Buis’s high-ranking position at the institution at the time. Buis wasn’t having his computer files backed up in the normal manner on the college server either, the application states, but was instead saving backups on local drives, known as time capsules. An investigator noted in (…) that several of the video files contained Internet search terms known by police to be specific to the child porn world. One such term was PTHC which, according to police, stands for Pre Teen Hard Core.

It left Venables free to scour the web for child pornography and swap horrific images with other paedophiles, one of whom was named as Lesley Blanchard. A police officer arrived later and the computer was found to have contained 57 indecent pictures and videos of children, some as young as two. Some of the videos showed a girl being raped. Venables admitted downloading the images, telling police: “I’m not a fool. I know the police can still get things off the hard drive.” However, he denied using chat rooms to contact other paedophiles until he was confronted with evidence of his exchanges with Blanchard, at which point he refused to answer any more questions.
