Eccentricity and anarchy
It’s the kind of eccentricity and anarchy that prompted authorities in the Dutch town of Boxtel to try and ban the last international hackers’ meeting, four years ago. But things have changed, believes one of the speakers at the conference, Brenno de Winter. “You know as soon as the word ‘hacker’ falls, people react in all kinds of ways. Many of them not rational.
It’s generally frightening when you realize that you don’t understand technology and somebody else does. But most people here are just technology lovers.” “They can learn from us”, says Brenno de Winter. “There is a lot of knowledge here, there are 2200 people here who are highly educated. And if we get a dialogue started, perhaps people will  begin to move in each other’s direction.”
A dialogue with the enemy. And while there are still plenty of hackers who are closer to Star Trek than to the finer points of privacy protection, the man who took the initiative for the Dutch hackers’ conferences, Rop Gonggrijp, believes it’s time for a new, more mature name: digital freedom fighters. “I think that’s a fair description, yes.”
