First effects of DigiNotar hack attack already noticeable: officials of local governments receive error messages when trying to access their e-mail facilities, consumers also noticed that certificates are no longer being accepted (effects on internet banking as of yet unknown), officials in the city of Amersfoort are unable to safely distribute information in preparation of a major political debate
Posted: 2011/09/03 in Education / Awareness, Network Security, Privacy / Data Protection, Public PolicyDutch IT security agency GovCERT previously convinced Mozilla to (re-)accept certain DigiNotar SSL-Certificates. They did so on the basis of faulty information as it turns out that all of DigiNotars systems have been compromised. Mozilla will now ban all DigiNotar Certificates
Posted: 2011/09/03 in Education / Awareness, Network Security, Privacy / Data Protection, Public Policy, Stats / reportsDutch government made the mistake to assume that some of the certificates would have been left alone. Information communicated by government IT security agencies GovCERT and Logius was flawed.
Research conducted by security Firm Fox-IT has still not been released in full by the Dutch government although it does use the results in its press communication efforts.

Google Reports “Considerable Progress” In Fight Against Piracy – Music industry would like Google to move links to ‘authorized’ music stores higher up Google’s search results too
Posted: 2011/09/03 in Copyright, Education / Awareness, Enforcement, Google, Illegal File Sharing, New Business Models, Online advertisingGoogle has also been criticized for not only making “pirate” sites findable, but actually funding them through their AdSense advertising programs. Google does in fact already ban file-sharing sites from using their ad scheme, but there are so many sites that often some get through. Google wants to tighten this up.
“In recent months, we have worked hard to improve our internal enforcement procedures. In April, we were among the first companies to certify compliance in the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (IAB’s) Quality Assurance Certification program, through which participating advertising companies will take steps to enhance buyer control over the placement and context of advertising and build brand safety,” notes Walker.
“In addition, we have invited rightsholder associations to identify their top priority sites for immediate review, and have acted on those tips when we have received them.”
Google also says it continues to make efforts to improve the visibility of authorized music content in its search results, such as through Music Rich Snippets.

In between all the jargon, there’s a message: Netflix isn’t willing to pay us what we think our content is worth. Unfortunately for Starz, it may soon find out that Netflix was actually paying what the content was worth

WikiLeaks published its full cache of unredacted US diplomatic cables on Friday – It’s out there anyway
Posted: 2011/09/03 in Education / Awareness, Privacy / Data Protection“Given that the full database file is downloadable from hundreds of sites there is only one internally rational action,” WikiLeaks said, adding that it wants to use crowdsourcing techniques to hunt for juicy nuggets in the vast treasure trove of information.

Dutch government ceases cooperation with DigiNotar. Government websites will remain operational. Dutch government to use alternative Certification Authority or one operated by the government itself
Posted: 2011/09/03 in Cybercrime, Education / Awareness, Network Security, Privacy / Data Protection, Public PolicyCertificates by DigiNotar in The Netherlands were used by the government in Iran to create the impression to Iranian internet users that their online communications were secure and that third parties could not eavesdrop on – for example – their Gmail or blogging activities. Meanwhile the Iranian government was intercepting their data or was at least able to.
When online businesses like Google discovered this, they banned SSL-certificates issues by DigiNotar, causing direct consequences for hundreds of crucial websites operated by the Dutch government itself which also used DigiNotar’s certificates to authenticate communication with internet users. At first, government authorities tried to convince some browser makers to continue to trust certain certificates issues by DigiNotar but questions were raised regarding the number of compromised DigiNotar certificates, the duration of the hack attacks aimed at DigiNotar, the lack of communication and transparency by the company and the reasons for involvement of the Dutch Secret Service in the DigiNotar investigation.
