We have downloaded datasets of all of the publicly-visible SSL certificates on the IPv4 Internet, in order to search for vulnerabilities, document the practices of Certificate Authorities, and aid researchers interested the web’s encryption infrastructure.

We are particularly concerned about the role and practices of Certificate Authorities (CAs), which are the organizations that can sign cryptographic certificates trusted by browsers. These certificates can contain statements like, “this public key belongs to EFF.org”, “this public key belongs to yahoo.com, paypal.com and mozilla.com”, or “this public key should be trusted to also act as a CA, signing certificates for other domains”. Browsers trust a very large number of these CAs, and unfortunately, the security of HTTPS is only as strong as the practices of the least trustworthy/competent CA.

It’s no secret that GoDaddy is a domain registrar and web hosting provider that uses sleazy marketing. It’s also no secret that they have come under attack for business practices that have angered many of their customers

Being outrageous seems to work just fine for Bob Parsons. He’s the founder of Go Daddy, the world’s largest domain-name registrar, which manages more than 32 million domain names for some six million customers worldwide. He launched the company in 1997, three years after selling his first business, a software company, to Intuit for $64 million. Go Daddy, which has annual revenue of about $350 million, now employs more than 2,000, most of whom work near the company’s headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona. As the sole owner, Parsons, a 58-year-old former Marine who won a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam, has the flexibility to do what he fancies. He typically spends his days traipsing around in motorcycle gear, shopping for rifles online, and brazenly stirring up controversy.

One of the things people say to me from time to time is, “You must feel very proud.” Well, the answer is, No, I don’t. That’s the last thing I think about. They say, “Well, look at what you’ve accomplished.” I say, “You know, the jury’s still out. Talk to me up in heaven; I’ll let you know how I did. If I make it there.”

A convicted criminal named Hüseyin Baybasin, who says he has got evidence against the the Secretary General of the Dutch Justice Department Mr. Joris Demmink in relation to child abuse accusations, appears to have been put in isolation during a visit by that same Secretary General to that prison facility in 2007. At the same time, a senior executive of the Dutch penitentiary system as well as an Attorney General who handled Mr. Baybasin’s criminal case were said to be present at that prison too.

Secondly, the Secretary General is said to have pulled the records on Mr. Baybasin in 2007 and in 2008 it is claimed that the Ministry of Justice itself was responsible for Mr. Baybasin being subject to a more strict prison regime.

Finally,  in March of this year, an official from a foreign country wanted to pay a visit to Mr. Baybasin. Not only was this visit said to be “not doable in practice” but explicit permission had to be asked to Mr. Demmink personally. The latter would later rejected a personal request by that same foreign official.

Meanwhile, Dutch law enforcement has retrieved a total of 46,775 pictures and 3,672 videos from the personal computer systems of Robert Mikelsons, the man who abused 87 very young children and professionally stored, distributed and exchanged those images online. At first, law enforcement had located 7,000 pictures and 600 videos as investigations were hampered due to security measures implemented by Mikelsons.

The government perhaps rightly suggests that any website ruled by a court to be essentially unlawful could see its search ranking penalised (i.e. site becomes harder to find or potentially even removed completely) and related advertising revenues choked.

Warner proposed to Hotfile an affiliate deal where content that was taken down would be replaced with links to movie stores where users could buy Warner movies. More takedowns thus means more potential revenue.

Summing up, Hotfile accuses Warner on three counts. Violation of the DMCA, intentional interference with a contractual or business relationship and negligence.

“I get these occasional letters from Lucasfilm saying that we regret to inform you that as Return of the Jedi has never gone into profit, we’ve got nothing to send you. Now here we’re talking about one of the biggest releases of all time,” said Prowse. “I don’t want to look like I’m bitching about it,” he said, “but on the other hand, if there’s a pot of gold somewhere that I ought to be having a share of, I would like to see it.”
