Posted: 2011/09/22 in Cybercrime, Education / Awareness, EnforcementGoogle: last year, we began to limit ad serving on high-end mobile devices if they pointed to landing pages with Flash-heavy content. This was an initial step taken to improve the experience for mobile users. In the coming weeks, we will be introducing the mobile optimization of a website as a new factor of ads quality for AdWords campaigns that are driving mobile search traffic
Posted: 2011/09/22 in Education / Awareness, Google, New Business ModelsAs a result of this change, ads that have mobile optimized landing pages will perform better in AdWords — they will generally drive more mobile traffic at a lower cost.

Although Movie Institute SFI acknowledge that the IP address (or addresses) logged by DoubleTrace does indeed belong to them, they reveal that it’s hardly trivial to discover the real-life person behind it. Not only do all of SFI’s staff share that IP, but several tenants (such as film and TV producers) do too. And visitors to their library, and visitors to some of their cinemas, and diners in the restaurant, not to mention those using the open WiFi in the cafe and foyer areas
Posted: 2011/09/22 in Education / Awareness, Enforcement, Illegal File SharingAs indicated by the way they have been proactive in this case by calling in the police, the SFI really seem to want to get to the bottom of the allegations. They say they have firewall logs that could show when and from where in their infrastructure the movies were being shared.
But – and little surprise here – DoubleTrace, the anti-piracy company behind the allegations, aren’t being forthcoming with their evidence.
An IP address is not a person, and unless anti-piracy companies want to let their ‘evidence’ be seen and tested in public, perhaps it’s better if they keep their allegations to themselves.

It’s hard to imagine that the mainstream media has been intentionally ignoring progressive causes while giving attention to the rallies of the extreme right. But consider that when a broad coalition of black activist groups, which had been spearheaded by the Nation of Islam, took to the streets to protest the bombing of Libya and raise awareness of social ills domestically for the Millions in Harlem March in New York City, there was no media attention.
The same could be said for the Israeli Tent City protest, which has been happening since early August. Tens of thousands of protestors have taken to the streets in Jerusalem, Haifa and a dozen other Israeli cities in what they are calling a Million Man March to protest that country’s rising cost of living. And yet as bombings by Hamas makes news day in and day out in western media outlets, what is pegged as the largest demonstration in Israeli history since the Lebanon protest can’t get any place on the TV screen here stateside.
Any suppression of news is considered censorship and by ignoring antiwar and other far-left protests, not only is the mainstream media missing important stories and failing to act as the watchdog for the 1st through 3rd Estates, it is also propagating agendas, particularly corporate, right and centrist political agendas, which seeks to suggest that there is no visible opposition to the U.S. wars and other international and domestic policy issues.

The other ultimate goal of the modern journalist is to appear “savvy.” And what could possibly be more embarrassingly unsavvy than taking seriously the ambitions of a band of granola-eating missed-the-60s dirty bleeping hippie wannabes — crazy enough to think that they can change the world. And so actually changing the world is something that only happens halfway around the world, in places like Cairo. It can’t happen here.

Posted: 2011/09/22 in Education / Awareness, New Business ModelsAn impression log record is created for all visits to a web page with a Like button. The log record includes the IP address of the machine requesting the Like button. This happens irrespective of the status of the visitor as a Facebook user and is similar to the impression log record that is created whenever anyone visits any website. The transmission of the IP address is a function of the web browser and is not specific to Facebook. It is Facebook’s policy to delete unique impression logs after 90 days
Posted: 2011/09/22 in Education / Awareness, Privacy / Data Protection, Public Policy, Stats / reportsFacebook only temporarily stores unique impression logs, which include IP addresses. The purpose of temporarily storing the impression logs, including IP addresses, is two-fold. We use IP addresses to monitor the technical performance of the Like button and to detect problems across particular networks. We also use IP addresses to assist us in our security efforts. IP addresses can be useful information in investigating the origins of threats, such as denial-of-service attacks.
When a Facebook user takes an affirmative action to “Like” an object on Facebook or on a thirdparty website using a Like button, this action forms part of their profile and may be used to target advertisements. Logs of visits to websites with a Like button on them are not used for marketing purposes.

Nation-State Attackers Are Adobe’s Biggest Worry
Posted: 2011/09/22 in Cybercrime, Education / AwarenessAdobe, like many other large software companies, has contacts in the big defense contractors, government agencies and other organizations that are most often the targets of state-sponsored attacks. So when a new attack begins, the company typically hears about it within hours as customers begin to call and report a new threat involving an Adobe product. Since the company began its software security program several years ago, the sophistication level of the people finding and exploiting new bugs in Flash or Reader has gone up significantly.

Facebook change. Are we even ‘allowed’ to complain? It’s a free service, on the face of it. We are allowed to sign up and use the service in exchange of our personal information, and do so free of charge. Are we consumers, customers or something else entirely?

“Google rigs its results,” say critics at Senate antitrust hearing
Posted: 2011/09/22 in Education / Awareness, Google, Public Policy“Google abandoned these core principles [of fair play] when they started interfering with profits and profit growth,” said Nextag CEO Jeff Katz today before a Senate antitrust hearing on the search giant. “Today, Google doesn’t play fair. Google rigs its results, biasing in favor of Google Shopping and against competitors like us.”
Thomas Barnett, the former Department of Justice antitrust head (and now counsel to Google opponents Expedia and TripAdvisor), blasted the company. “Google won’t even admit to reality,” he said. He added that TripAdvisor’s CEO had gone to Google and asked for its results to be excluded from Google Places; again, Google said that doing so meant the site would not appear anywhere in Google search engine results. It was a “coercive tactic,” said Barnett.
The ironic part is that while the protesters are marching and camping out in New York, they are not only under attack by biased print media that is underplaying the movement, the American Right is calling the protestors socialists, communists, anti-capitalists, and anti-democratic
Posted: 2011/09/22 in Education / Awareness, Public PolicyMaybe Wall Street and Washington have a reason to be worried. The U. S. is collapsing under mismanagement and an unimaginable debt load. Top this off with staggering unemployment rates and corporate bailouts and the people are becoming tired. On the right side of the political spectrum, you have seen the rise of the Tea Party Movement, and now we are seeing the rise of a new movement, a coalition of centre left groups that are calling for revolution.
