So we have a protester from the group Anonymous who is trying on the mantle of Guy Fawkes, by wearing his face. Anonymous seems to have adopted the Guy Fawkes mask as an emblem. FYI: these are the folks who put the families of Arizona state police at risk by publishing their names and addresses for the hell of it. I suppose it’s fitting, as Fawkes was essentially a terrorist. The only reason he is not reviled is that he failed. Several hundred deaths are not credited to him. He avoided being England’s Timothy McVeigh.

Victims are generally encouraged to blink vigorously in order to encourage tears, which will help flush the irritant from the eyes.

A formal study of five often-recommended treatments for skin pain (Maalox, 2% lidocaine gel, baby shampoo, milk, or water) concluded that:[15][16]

“…there was no significant difference in pain relief provided by five different treatment regimens. Time after exposure appeared to be the best predictor for decrease in pain…”

To avoid rubbing the spray into the skin, thereby prolonging the burning sensation, and in order to not spread the compound to other parts of the body, victims should try to avoid touching affected areas. There are also wipes, manufactured[17] for the express purpose of serving to decontaminate someone who has received a dose of pepper spray. Many ambulance services and emergency departments use baby shampoo to remove the spray and with generally good effect. Some of the OC and CS will remain in the respiratory system, but a recovery of vision and the coordination of the eyes can be expected within 7 to 15 minutes.[18]

Some “triple-action” pepper sprays also contain “tear gas” (CS gas), which can be neutralized with sodium metabisulfite (Campden tablets, used in homebrewing), though it, too, is not water soluble and needs to be washed off using the same procedure as for pepper spray.

Remedies

We have been doing trials with pepper spray to find good remedies. There are some definite things that you can do after being sprayed to help minimize the discomfort. None of these are miracle cures: using these remedies will help people to feel better faster, but it will still take time.

Remedy for the eyes, nose, and mouth: L.A.W. (liquid antacid and water)

Remedies for the skin: For pepper spray on the skin

Secondary treatments

Secondary treatments can include: walking around with your arms outstretched, removing contaminated clothing, and taking a cool shower.

In fact, it is essential to shower and wash or discard your clothes as soon as you are able. Pepper spray is toxic, and will continually contaminate you and everyone around you until you get rid of it. Until then, try not to touch your eyes or your face, or other people, furniture, carpets etc. to avoid further contamination. Shower using the coldest water you can stand (to keep your pores from opening). Wash your clothes using strong detergents. The best protection against chemical weapons is a gas mask.
