The new privacy policy will gather a long list of information including URLs, search terms, location information, app usage and feature usage. And if that isn’t enough, Verizon will monitor how you use your calling plan and what mobile phones you buy. It’ll also compile your demographic information. The only stuff it won’t plunder is your identifying information which is off-limits and will not be shared.

The latter term is not only more technically appropriate, it is much more reflective of the fact that at any point after the data has been collected, the tracking company might try to attach an identity to the pseudonym (unique ID) that your data is labeled with. Thus, identification of a user affects not only future tracking, but also retroactively affects the data that’s already been collected. Identification needs to happen only once, ever, per user.
Arvind noted five ways in which a user’s identity may be associated with third-party web tracking data.

He had no choice but to connect his unsecured private laptop to the business network of the Certificate Authority. DigiNotar would also require its employees to use their private mobile phone for business purposes.
De Graaf also feels that the responsible Minister Piet Hein Donner has demonstrated that he is incompetent to deal with these issues by:
1. Not providing all relevant DigiNotar information to Members of Parliament and IT experts (parts of the investigation were classified);
2. Arguing that victims of the DigiNotar hack would notice that their connections had been compromised because in those cases, the intercepted data would not reach its final destination. The trademark of man-in-the-middle attacks however is that the cybercriminal would simply copy the original data and allow the original data to reach its destination.
De Graaf believes that as a result of the DigiNotar hack, the lives of 300,000 people and their families had been endangered.
