To the company’s critics in Congress and in the conservative legal community, Google has become a puppet master in Obama’s Washington, with Plex executives attending exclusive state dinners and backing White House tech policy initiatives. “Like Halliburton in the previous administration,” warned the National Legal and Policy Center in 2010, “Google has an exceptionally close relationship with the current administration.” To the company’s foes outside the U.S. — especially in Beijing — Google is viewed as a virtual extension of the U.S. government: “the White House’s Google,” as one state-sponsored Chinese magazine put it.

Mexico’s gangsters have also shown to be resilient at absorbing losses, and adept at corrupting both government officials and members of the police and military. They’ve also demonstrated the ability to bypass military checkpoints to move drugs and personnel.

To make matters worse, killing or capturing cartel leaders hasn’t reduced the overall level of violence, or reversed the growing reach of the cartels throughout Mexico, Central America and the United States. Another problem: there’s no shortage of replacements for cartel leaders once the top bosses are taken out. Even worse, decapitation can cause violence to increase, at least in the short-term.

According to Alejandro Hope, an analyst and former official at Mexico’s CISEN (the country’s equivalent of the CIA), decapitation of “criminal bands” can escalate violence “due to succession conflicts, the unraveling of some groups, or through power vacuums that are exploited by rivals groups.” Hope supports decapitation strikes, but “accompanied by measures which will prevent destabilizing effects, and maximize effects which dissuade violence.” Namely, targeting the most violent cartels first and capturing their leaders if at all possible.

The program, commonly referred to as “graduated response,” requires that ISPs send out one or two educational notices to those customers who are accused of downloading copyrighted content illegally. If the customer doesn’t stop, the ISP is then asked to send out “confirmation notices” asking that they confirm that they have received notice.

They will also be informed of the risks they incur if they don’t stop pirating material. The ISP then can ratchet up the pressure. The ISPs can choose from a list of penalties or what the RIAA calls “mitigation measures” that include throttling down the customer’s connection speed to suspending Web access until the subscriber agrees to stop pirating. The ISPs can waive the mitigation measure if they choose.

The Whois data for the Pirate Bay’s new .se domain lists the name of Fredrik Neij, one of the defendants in the original trial who was sentenced to 10 months in prison.

The exact goals of the new investigation are unclear. The prosecution, led by piracy investigator Frederick Ingblad, confirmed that they “are interested in torrent sites” but refused to comment further. It is expected that the Swedish authorities want to finish what they failed to do in 2006, shut down The Pirate Bay website for good.

Binero recently made the news for hosting nufilmkijken.nl, a website taken down by BREIN:

At first the broadcaster did not want to remove the game, but it has now changed its mind. It does add that they are not removing the content because they’re not supporting it, but because the allegations of anti-semitism are overshadowing the satirical nature of the game.

Various organizations reject the notion that this effort can be characterized as ‘satire’ and feel that the wording used is similar to the texts found on ultra right-wing websites.

The Dutch government does not have a particular opinion on the matter. Minister of Culture, Education and Science Marja van Bijsterveldt also argued that they do not get involved in issues related to content distributed by public broadcasters.

Next to that the initiative has been funded by the VPRO foundation itself, not government subsidies. A similar reasoning was applied to the Complaint Center For Information About Misconduct By Central And Eastern European Citizens In The Netherlands.

It’s a remarkable trend just how the Ultra-Left has teamed up with the Ultra-Right in relation to a variety of topics. It’s equally remarkable how some authorities choose to remain silent on the issues.

In downloadable game, players can use ‘Anne Frank card’ to colonize West Bank, ‘Jewish stinginess’ card to gain resources.

Organizations combating anti-Semitism have called on the Dutch government to persuade the network, VPRO, to halt the downloading of the board game.

To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money.

How did we get here? The firm changed the way it thought about leadership. Leadership used to be about ideas, setting an example and doing the right thing. Today, if you make enough money for the firm (and are not currently an ax murderer) you will be promoted into a position of influence.

What are three quick ways to become a leader? a) Execute on the firm’s “axes,” which is Goldman-speak for persuading your clients to invest in the stocks or other products that we are trying to get rid of because they are not seen as having a lot of potential profit. b) “Hunt Elephants.” In English: get your clients — some of whom are sophisticated, and some of whom aren’t — to trade whatever will bring the biggest profit to Goldman. Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t like selling my clients a product that is wrong for them. c) Find yourself sitting in a seat where your job is to trade any illiquid, opaque product with a three-letter acronym.

It makes me ill how callously people talk about ripping their clients off. Over the last 12 months I have seen five different managing directors refer to their own clients as “muppets,” sometimes over internal e-mail. Even after the S.E.C., Fabulous Fab, Abacus, God’s work, Carl Levin, Vampire Squids? No humility? I mean, come on. Integrity? It is eroding. I don’t know of any illegal behavior, but will people push the envelope and pitch lucrative and complicated products to clients even if they are not the simplest investments or the ones most directly aligned with the client’s goals? Absolutely. Every day, in fact.

It astounds me how little senior management gets a basic truth: If clients don’t trust you they will eventually stop doing business with you. It doesn’t matter how smart you are.
