A rash of patent lawsuits has prompted the UN to call smartphone makers and others mobile industry bodies together. It said the parties needed to address the “innovation-stifling use of intellectual property” which had led to several devices being banned from sale. It said innovations deemed essential to industry standards, such as 3G or Jpeg photos, would be the meeting’s focus. It noted that if just one patent holder demanded unreasonable compensation the cost of a device could “skyrocket”.

Microsoft and Apple are among firms that have called on others not to enforce sales bans on the basis of such standards-essential patents. However, lawyers have noted that doing so would deprive other companies of way to counter-attacking other types of patent lawsuits pursued by the two companies.

Illya Kazi, a member of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys said competing interests would make it hard to resolve the matter.

“The situation is complex and it’s very easy for someone to complain something is not fair because it is adverse to their position,” he told the BBC. ”I don’t think there’s a simple answer. High-level talks can’t be a bad thing, but I would be surprised if they can come up with an agreed implementable conclusion.”

The talks are scheduled to take place at the ITU’s headquarters in Geneva on 10 October.

Highlights:

My involvement in The Pirate Bay had been one, and one only: media spokesperson

I grew more and more active in the political aspect of the topic after the raid, and indirectly, I became a representative of those who say that file sharing is something positive for society as a whole

Sweden has a reputation of being a country with high morals, sans corruption and with common sense guiding its justice. In my case, this has been shoved aside

I was also the most hated person in the power corridors of Hollywood. I was the one individual most important to silence, being the media spokesperson for their nemesis. Young people all over the world listened to me as I told them of the fantastic opportunity we have for a free and open, participatory culture, as long as we don’t have to be locked up by these corporations. I spoke with all kinds of people – from teachers and students, to presidents of some of the world’s largest countries – about the opportunities and the threats on the table. The threats were mostly the adversaries in my case

The proceedings in the District Court were very strange. There was commotion just everywhere: TV crews from BBC, al-Jazeera, Swedish Public TV, Norwegian Public TV, and more. For several days, it was like the whole world was watching when Sweden were prosecuting a few people for aiding and abetting a crime with no principal perpetrator

Looking at the verdict from the District Court, I couldn’t really understand why I had been convicted. There were no specific charges against me. There were no periods of time where I had been involved. There was not even a crime proven to have been committed – and yet, I was convicted of aiding and abetting a crime that had not been proven to have taken place. Because of substandard evidence, the burden had been turned around – I knew things that could have been useful for The Pirate Bay, and therefore, the reasoning went, these things had happened and I had performed them. Despite the fact that all people who had been heard stated that everything programmed or developed on The Pirate Bay had happened before the events for which I were on trial, and that the skills I possessed that might had been useful, was still dwarfed by the two founders of The Pirate Bay. Skills that, in the end, weren’t even needed as everything had been untouched

I was personally convicted to eight months in prison and 46 million SEK in damages. This sum, having collected interest, is closer to 100 million SEK today (11 million euros)

I usually say that I feel like a Finn convicted of a gun murder, because there was a knife nearby, and “us Finns are known for using knives”

As I was well-liked by all parties, the CEO of this Swedish (publicly traded) company asked me to send the invoice from my Swedish company. I did, and then I paid an invoice from the company that they themselves refused to pay directly. There were personal quarrels behind it all, and it was a way to come to an end of this quarrel. I didn’t make a cent from it and the money wasn’t even in my account for a full day

These people in the Swedish judicial system have been wielding the power that the public has entrusted in them, and them have done it in a manner that I hope they feel shame for the rest of their lives. They are textbook corrupt and criminal. I know that I’m at a point where I have less than a tenth of a percent’s chance of escaping punishment. Not having to go to jail for crimes I didn’t commit. Crimes that weren’t even committed in the first place. Crimes that surely aren’t even crimes to begin with, if they had been committed, and if they had been committed, hadn’t been so by me. It’s a bizarre situation with my distance to any real criminal liability.

Still, I must spend a couple of months locked up in a Class 2 facility since there is said to be a risk that I would repeat these crimes, crimes that haven’t been committed, almost seven years ago. Crimes that, if they are to be committed, require access to high-speed net connectivity, physical machines, server halls and the like. Crimes that don’t need to be committed, since that kind of technology isn’t used any longer. And once I’m out of jail, where I’m certainly going to become increasingly bitter over the situation, I have a debt of 100 million SEK (11 million euros). Money in fantasy numbers, supposed to “compensate” for aiding and abetting the assistance of a theoretically possible crime I’m supposed to have done by doing things that didn’t happen. An economic debt to some of the world’s richest corporations. A debt that practically means I don’t have a future in Sweden as a country, if I want to live off of anything other than breadcrumbs or the goodwill of my friends. This debt is equivalent to exile, to deportation. I will need to become an economic refugee from Sweden.

This bizarre situation is one that authorities in Sweden close their eyes to. It is an insult to everything the judicial system is supposed to represent. It is a shame for the entire population. A population that doesn’t even share the opinions behind the laws I’m convicted of breaking. And it’s these things that I ask that all of us be pardoned from. The lost faith in the justice system with all the bias, all the obvious corruption, the unconstitutional orders across branches of government (ministerstyre) that was never investigated, all the ugly tactics that have been used to satisfy a trading partner high on its own power. Sweden’s judicial system has sold out individuals. That is not supposed to happen in a democracy.

Grant the people of Sweden pardon from this corruption.

As a psy-op, the manifestation of Assange and WikiLeaks has effectively used engineered operations of secret document exposure to give the appearance of forced political responsibility for intelligence and policy failures. This is detailed in the CIA document entitled, The Secret Team .

The CIA connection to Assange creates an avenue where fake leaks of documents can be made to give the illusion to the public that they are privy to secret information.

Meanwhile, the CIA “people-power coup” has been integral in many fake revolutions both in the streets of foreign nations and on the internet.

WikiLeaks assisted the US government’s overthrow of the Tunisian government. Assange’s portrayal as a lone wolf just trying to expose corruption has aided the US government as the perfect psy-op cover that convinces individuals to rally in favor of their hero, Julian Assange, and keep his crusade alive.

The leaks Assange has revealed directly benefit the US, Israeli and UN campaign to remove Assad from his governmental seat and implant a stooge, just as was done with the “ election ” of Muslim Brotherhood member Muhammad Morsi.

This is all very easy to understand: a CIA operation where information stolen from Syrian computer servers by Flame (which is the cyber-weapon of the US government) was given to Anonymous (who are CIA agents) and “leaked” by WikiLeaks (the fake whistleblower website).

In a tweet to his followers this week, the man behind the world’s most famous file-locker site — and one of the FBI’s biggest foes — hinted that Megaupload will be brought back to life.

“SOPA is dead. PIPA is dead. ACTA is dead. MEGA will return. Bigger. Better. Faster. Free of charge & shielded from attacks. Evolution!” reads a tweet from the official @KimDotcom Twitter account. Dotcom— born Kim Schmitz — is currently being targeted by international authorities over his role with the website, which American official say was the centerpiece in a vast online piracy conspiracy.

There are some delays as execs wait to see how a number of Assange-related events pan out: there’s his Swedish fate; the potential leakage of Syrian government emails; the pending case of Bradley Manning, the U.S. Army soldier who is suspected of providing classified information to WikiLeaks.

Most telling, as Anonymous pointed out, is the denial of access to websites relating to VoIP phone services.

The list is long and, fair warning, replete with URLs for pornographic and sex-related websites, including those focused on sexual education. In the same regard, online dating sites were also blocked, and quite extensively at that.

In total, 196 pages from the “facebook.com” domain were blocked.

Perhaps not surprisingly, a substantial amount of the allegedly blocked content pertains to religious and government issues. The list includes 157 links containing the word “Islam,” as well as 50 containing the word “Muslim,” and 22 with the word “Allah.” Similarly, the list contains 17 sites domains containing the term “Christian,” 13 with the word “Jesus,” and nine with the word “Bible.”

The text is illuminating in many ways, and even if you don’t agree with the man, well worth a read if you know Swedish. It details how the police tried to influence Sunde into choosing a less competent lawyer, incompetence at every step of the Pirate Bay trial, and how he has now been sentenced to pay over 100,000,000 SEK in damages, for being accessory to a crime that didn’t take place, and might not even exist.

This is, of course, Sunde’s own version and might not be entirely correct. But if all, or indeed any, of this is true, the Swedish police and courts look like a really, really bad joke, whether you think that Sunde deserves punishment or not. Well worth a read, for everyone who has ever touched upon copyright questions at all – i.e. everyone who has internet access! You’ll find it on Peter Sunde’s blog.

The infection, known as toxoplasmosis, is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Humans can become chronically infected by eating undercooked meat or unwashed vegetables or by handling cat litter, as the parasite is known to multiply in the gut of infected cats.

Toxoplasmosis is often symptom-free, but can be dangerous in people with weak immune systems or during pregnancy, since the parasite may be passed to babies.

Some studies have linked the parasite to a higher chance of developing schizophrenia, and researchers believe because the T. gondii parasite lives in the brain, it could have an effect on emotions and behavior.

For the new report, Dr. Teodor Postolache from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and his colleagues used Danish medical registries to track 45,788 women who were originally included in a study that screened newborn babies for toxoplasmosis.

Scientists Observe the Mysterious Hidden Structure of the Universe for the First Time Ever

Now, for the first time in history, a team of astronomers has observed these hidden tendrils that extend everywhere. Dark matter, the mysterious substance that appears to give the Universe its structure, has finally been revealed.

The results of the study were published in Nature last Wednesday, going mostly unnoticed because of the announcement of the Higgs boson.

Instead of a question, give an immediate answer to the question of why the hell are you not answering my call—something that vaguely refers to you being busy or preoccupied.

  • “Hey, I’m in the middle of something, can I call you back?”
  • “Hey, I’m on a bus and someone next to me is sleeping, can’t talk.”
  • “Yo, on the sidewalk and it’s really loud, what’s happening?”
  • “Hey, sorry, I’m in the middle of something, what’s going on?”

Etc.

The point is to give yourself plausibile deniability about straight-up ignoring the call. Of course you ignored the call. You both know it. But if you have even the semblance of a real reason to not pick up, society lets you off the hook. Don’t ask why it works that way—it’s just the way we’ve all been warped.

Yep, no more need of pesky desktop clients for torrenting anymore but the possibilities of BitTorrent in the browser don’t just end there. When web developers get a better handle of it, they’ll be able to make tools like torrent video streaming, drag and drop file transfer, social sharing and more. It’s BitTorrent finally modernized for the browser and potentially a lot easier to use. Torque is only in alpha right now but it could lead to a huge shift in BitTorrenting.

The life of a pirate is getting quite comfortable.

The Telegraph reports that BA is concerned that it’s missing out on greeting the powerful with sufficient personal deference.

It is said that staff will use iPads to Google passenger names and find out what specific passengers look like, so these customers can be specially greeted.

But who knows what else these smiling, Smiley ambassadors of Britishness might discover?

The Daily Mail quotes Nick Pickles, director of privacy group Big Brother Watch, as being alarmed: “Fundamentally, British Airways have not asked their passengers’ permission to search Google to find their picture or any other information.”

Of course, problems might arise when staff either discover something controversial, or simply plain wrong.

A 40-page document “cherry-picked” from nearly 22 million emails is the only information the FBI believes should be made available to Kim Dotcom before his extradition hearing.

Lawyers spent yesterday arguing over what the internet mogul will be able to see before the case, set to begin next month.

With the deadline drawing closer and lawyers on both sides unable to reach a compromise, it seems increasingly likely proceedings will be delayed.

Dotcom said he believed the delays were deliberate. “Everyone can see there is a strategy of delay on the part of the US Government and the Crown.”

At the centre of the argument is a document called the “Record of Case”, effectively a summary of the FBI information relevant to the case. It is subject to a non-publication order, but the defence team revealed yesterday it was a summary document from more than 22 million emails obtained by the FBI.

Guyon Foley, lawyer for Dotcom’s co-accused trio of Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk, said it “cherry-picked” from emails and did not provide a fair amount of information on which the defence could base its argument.

Mr Davison did not see why the rest of the information could not be provided, given that it was electronic. “It’s just a case of putting it on a device and delivering it.”

The defence team only wanted material relevant to the case, he said. “This is not a fishing expedition.”

Crown lawyer John Pike argued that there was no need for Dotcom to have access because he was not being tried in New Zealand.

The judge in the extradition case needed only to decide if there was a case for him to answer in the US, Mr Pike said, and that question was answered by the record of case.
