During recent years, many sites and individuals connected to the alleged streaming of copyrighted movies have found themselves at the mercy of the United States and UK governments. According to the makers of a hard-hitting short film, Richard O’Dwyer, Kim Dotcom, and the admins of NinjaVideo and SurfTheChannel are all victims of the same phenomenon. Are our voted representatives really Political Prostitutes?

Oron has been under increasing pressure recently, particularly due to a lawsuit brought by adult movie studio Liberty Media.

In response to that suit the court froze Oron’s assets and then denied them access to funds to pay LeaseWeb, their host at the time. Whether LeaseWeb have been paid or not remains unclear but it seems almost certain that Oron are now heading for a new home.

TorrentFreak has received information from two different sources who both claim to know why Oron has chosen to move its infrastructure. As yet we’ve been unable to back up the claims – we’ll report back when we can.

Copyright agencies were probably not too happy to hear that one of their bastions of domination – the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) – has proposed [PDF] observer membership status to Pirate Parties International (PPI), the international Pirate Party organisation.

As observer members they’ll be able to participate in meetings, but not vote (that is reserved for member countries). Currently, the list of observer members (some 250+) mostly focuses on artist and ‘industry’ groups, with only a few public-interest groups, such as the EFF, IP Justice, and Union for the Public Domain in there.

Well known Pirate Bay proxy UnblockedPiratebay.com, also promoted by Dutch blog Geenstijl.nl, appears to host malicious content which can lead to a malware infection.

Upon visiting the web page Google is displaying an alert stating:

Warning: Something’s Not Right Here!
unblockedpiratebay.com contains content from fastonlineusers.com, a site known to distribute malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site.
Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you’ve visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it’s possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed, and perhaps try again tomorrow or go somewhere else.
We have already notified fastonlineusers.com that we found malware on the site. For more about the problems found on fastonlineusers.com, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page.

Highlights of his plea:

  • Litigation against The Pirate Bay has limited success as thanks to the Dutch blog Geenstijl.nl the site can be accessed via proxy http://fucktimkuik.org/
  • The anti-piracy organization is using the same arguments that were used by the ACTA designers when trying to attack the hosting provider of file sharing platform SumoTorrent. The ACTA arguments have been rejected.
  • Makers of fountain pens, manufacturers (and rental stores) of CDs and DVDs, video-editors, makers of rubber stamps, engineers who install land line phones, fans of analog photography and representatives of the traditional newspapers will all have a difficult time due to the digitization of society and this is something we’ll just have to live with and accept.

Resistance is futile. People will continue to download, including the author himself. The only thing that BREIN will achieve is the realization of drastic legal measures which will affect everyone’s freedom. That’s nice for dictatorships but detrimental to societal progress.

Dutch Book store owner Wim Krings makes note of several news articles that quote famous authors who indicate that they have hundreds of eBooks on their Kindles and eReaders. One of his customers even bought an eReader with 6,000 books which must have cost the customer around 90,000 Euros…if he would have paid for those eBooks.

He is now thinking of becoming an author himself because it must be a job that pays well.

Dutch law enforcement authorities have confirmed this and also stated that the police officer now regrets having erased the video.
