YouTube was a bit keen in the prosecution of copyright laws during NASA’s victorious Curiosity rover landing yesterday morning, booting the first video excerpt of the livestream off its site for infringing a news service.

NASA’s video coverage and pics are actually generally copyright-free, which made the overzealous bot takedown even more ironic as it pulled the video from the space agency’s channel for infringing on the rights of Scripps Local News.

Bob Jacobs, NASA’s deputy associate administrator for communications, said that claims like this one happen every month, often with particularly popular videos.

“Everything from imagery to music gets flagged,” he said. “We’ve been working with YouTube in a an effort to stop the automatic disabling of videos. So far, it hasn’t helped much.”

Probably a smart move for any government

Tehran plans to remove its key ministries and state bodies from the Internet next month, calling the worldwide web “untrustworthy.” The action is the first phase in a planned Iranian project to replace the Internet with a domestic intranet.

Limited to the UK for now, the Telegraph reports that the launch of Bingo Friendzy signals the first instance of a Facebook app allowing gamers to stake real cash on the outcome of their play. Players have to be aged 18 and using a computer in the UK to be able to play. Julien Codorniou, Facebook’s head of gaming for Europe, explained to the Financial Times:

“Gambling is very popular and well regulated in the UK . . . for millions of bingo users it’s already a social experience [so] it makes sense [for us] to offer that as well.”

What happened to me exposes vital security flaws in several customer service systems, most notably Apple and Amazon’s. Apple tech support gave the hackers access to my iCloud account. Amazon tech support gave them the ability to see a piece of information – a partial credit card number – that Apple used to release information. In short, the very four digits that Amazon considers unimportant enough to display in the clear on the Web are precisely the same ones that Apple considers secure enough to perform identity verification. The disconnect exposes flaws in data management policies endemic to the entire technology industry, and points to a looming nightmare as we enter the era of cloud computing and connected devices.

Dotcom told the court that at the time of the raid he was in bed installing a Windows update on his computer. Dotcom said he heard a helicopter outside and thought it may have been some guests arriving for his birthday celebrations. However, he realized that something was wrong when the downdraft of the helicopter’s rotors started kicking up stones onto the glass of his Coatesville mansion.

After hearing banging on his door, Dotcom said he fled to a pre-arranged safe room in the house. He stayed in this “red room” until police arrived.

“I heard loud banging noises. I was just scared and worried. I thought I’d better wait for them to come to me rather than popping out and scaring someone who might shoot me,” he said.

Dotcom said he had access to a firearm in the “red room” but in the interests of safety and to simply ward off would-be attackers rather inflicting more permanent damage, the first two rounds in the gun were rubber bullets.

Dotcom denied allegations he refused to cooperate with police and told the court that he had his arms in a “surrender” position when the police entered the room. Apparently that passive attitude didn’t help.

“And then they were all over me. I had a punch to the face, boots kicking me down to the floor, a knee to the ribs. One man was standing on my hand,” he said, added that he was then pushed to the floor and his wrists cable-tied. “It was really tight. I was screaming,” he said.

Dotcom told the court that the force used was completely unnecessary and if only the police had asked he would have complied straight away.

“If someone had knocked on the door and said they had a document with charges I would have let them in,” he said.

“Then they were all over me, I had a punch to the face, I had boots kicking me down to the floor,” he told the court, adding that one officer stood on his hand and another kneed him in the ribs.

“I was screaming and I was in pain,” he said.

Dotcom, 38, was giving evidence at an appeal by prosecutors against a court ruling in June that the raid was illegal because the search warrant used by police was too broad to be considered reasonable.

Questioned by the prosecution about why there was no sign of violence in mugshots taken after his arrest, he said they were taken two hours after his arrest and bruises did not show up until the next day.
