Read the Parliamentary questions here (PDF, in Dutch).

Following recent reports on the not so modest role of the Netherlands in cybercrime and other illegal acts on the internet, Dutch MP Gesthuizen (Socialist Party) asked questions to Minister of Security and Justice Opstelten yesterday. From the questions, it is quite clear that MP Gesthuizen is very committed to creating a more stringent regulatory climate for hosting provider activities, and for combating cybercrime in the Netherlands.

Gesthuizen particularly wants to know from the Minister of Security and Justice, what he thinks of the McAfee report‘s statements that 75% of all hacked and malicious websites that attempt to infect visitors in Europe and Middle East via ‘drive-by download’s originate from servers hosted in the Netherlands. The MP furthermore refers to our recent post on FutureOnCopyright.com on the significant role of the Netherlands and the University of Tilburg’s network in the (illegal) seeding and uploading of content to The Pirate Bay, and other reports on cybercrime, spam and ‘rogue providers’ in the Netherlands.

Gesthuizen seems to be convinced that the current Dutch policy on cybercrime should be fiercer and urges the Dutch government to make clear and pro-active policy on what is and is not allowed in regards of hosting activities.

An affiliate of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the Motion Picture Association (MPA), has signed a pact with Chinese’s largest e-commerce company Taobao to cut the sale of counterfeit items on its site.

Under the new agreement, the Chinese company and the MPA will work together to identify and take down listings on Taobao Marketplace that are believed to be counterfeit goods or that “infringe the copyrights of MPA member companies,” Reuters reports. Members of the MPA include Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

The Taobao Marketplace is China’s largest consumer-focused e-commerce platform and holds at least 70 percent market share, according to Reuters.

As live streaming video surges in popularity, so are copyright “bots” — automated systems that match content against a database of reference files of copyrighted material. These systems can block streaming video in real time, while it is still being broadcast, leading to potentially worrying implications for freedom of speech.

Leaseweb allegedly gave the Dutch Team High Tech Crime of the National Police exactly three days to investigate the Bredolab botnet, otherwise Leaseweb would go and take down the botnet by themselves.

Only then an investigation was launched by the Dutch police to analyze the botnet, arrest a suspect and study the users of the botnet.

The Eurozone’s economy has stalled with unemployment the only thing that’s showing growth, says former chief accountant for the European Commission, Marta Andreasen.

The economic crisis is partly due to policies that the European Commission put in place – yet it doesn’t take responsibility for its actions, she said.

So this feels like the future: Amazon’s X-Ray for Movies can tell what flick you’re watching on your Kindle Fire HD, and gives you every piece of information you could ever want about it every time you pause. Pretty incredible stuff.

The information is gleaned from IMDB (which Amazon conveniently owns), and pulls granular detail down to which specific actors are in the scene your watching. From there, you can navigate back through their whole career, read their bios, and do all the other creeping you’d normally do on the world’s foremost movie database.
