The proposed new energy policy is a major shift from Japan’s decades-long advocacy of nuclear power. It calls for greater reliance on renewable energy, more conservation and sustainable use of fossil fuels and would see Japan joining Germany in turning its back on nuclear energy. The new policy requires endorsement by the entire cabinet, and Japanese news reports say it has already agreed to the changes.

“Based on facing the reality of this grave accident and by learning lessons from the accident, the government has decided to review the national energy strategy from scratch,” a policy document said.

“One of the key pillars of the new strategy is to achieve a society that does not depend on nuclear energy as soon as possible.”

Under the proposals, nuclear reactors would be shut down after 40 years and new ones would no longer be built.

As for the future? It is expected that legal pressure will continue. It wouldn’t be a surprise if The Pirate Bay’s domain names are seized in the coming year. But whether that will bring the deviant site to its knees is doubtful.

As the resilient file-sharing icon that it is, it’s more likely than not that The Pirate Bay will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year.

The proposal does not permit commercial exploitations of the unidentified works, except by museums, archives and libraries and only to fund specific digitisation programmes.

It’s a live issue because of the potential impact on jobs. The emotive term ‘orphan work’ is quite misleading: any work for which an author can’t readily be identified – and that includes almost all photographs and illustrations bobbing about on the web – is an ‘orphan’ work, so the threat to the livelihoods of snappers and illustrators from poorly worded or malicious legislation is very real.

Every time I log onto Facebook, it asks me for my phone number. I skip that step. And each time I do that, I am reminded that my security status on this social networking Web site is low.

I fail to understand how my phone number can make my account more secure. On the contrary, I would rather give out as little information to Facebook, Twitter, and so on, as possible. It’s bad enough that I get so many marketing calls. Putting my phone number on my profile would mean getting some more of those pesky marketing calls. Moreover, I would be giving out more information to people who I do not know, therefore don’t trust (the security settings notwithstanding; because I do not understand cyber world and cybercriminals well enough).

In fact, only two networks in Europe currently support the iPhone 5 on LTE: Deutsche Telekom in Germany, and EE in the U.K. (previously Everything Everywhere) which this week announced its new 4G LTE network. But it hasn’t even launched yet, though pegged for a November release date.

Miller, who cut his reverse-engineering teeth working for the National Security Agency, has been a prolific supplier of OS X and iOS exploits at events such as the Black Hat Security conference and the Pwn2Own hacker competition. He was the first known person to develop a working exploit that remotely took control of the iPhone. Less than a month after the Apple phone was released in 2007, he published a proof-of-concept webpage that secretly siphons SMS text messages, contact information, call history, and voicemail. Over the past five years, he has developed dozens of other exploits that target iOS and OS X. He has said he focused on Apple products because those are the devices he used most and he wanted them to be more secure.

A Dutch court has ruled that the website GeenStijl infringed copyright by linking to unauthorized copies of nude pictures of reality star Britt Dekker. The pictures originally appeared in the Dutch version of Playboy magazine.

According to the Associated Press, the website has been ordered to pay €28,400 ($36,000) and will face further fines if it does not remove the links.

“The court said GeenStijl called attention to naked photos of model Britt Dekker posted on a website called Filefactory by an unknown person shortly before publication of the November 2011 issue of the magazine,” the AP reports.

“This decision is terrifying for every journalist and everyone with a website,” GeenStijl said in an online statement. The site says it disagrees with the court’s reasoning, and argued that Dutch copyright law is in urgent need of reform.

Linking generally does not constitute copyright infringement in the United States. However, the US government has begun prosecuting the operators of “link sites” that contain large numbers of carefully organized links to infringing content.
