Famous Dutch Lawyer Richard Korver: In The Netherlands, Victims Have Hardly Any Rights

Posted: 2012/10/13 in Education / Awareness, Jurisprudence, Legislation, Litigation, New Business Models, Public Policy, Stats / reports

Richard Korver has published a new book called ‘Right to speak‘ and makes a plea for:

1. new rules which enable judges to force suspects to be present in court to listen to the statements of their victims;

2. new rules which obligate judges to force suspects to respond to the statements and questions of their victims;

The legal system and prosecution phase in The Netherlands traditionally revolves around the protection of the suspect against (abuse of power of) the Dutch government, prosecutors and magistrates. The protection and empowerment of victims is only recently being debated.
